View Full Version : Windows XP Pro extremely slow (2-4 minutes) shutting down - Startu

I have very recently installed a new hard drive and re-installed Windows XP
Pro from scratch. Even after installing all of the Windows updates it takes
2-4 minutes to shut down and after shutting down the computer is slow to
re-boot. This is a new PC with an AMD Athlon 64x2 5200+ proccessor and 4gig
memory. The PC is set up as Triple boot with each operating system (Vista
Ultimate 64bit, Windows XP Pro, and Windows 2000) on seperate drives. The
other 2 operating system don't have any issues. After searching this issue on
the internet I have (1) disabled the ClearPageFileAtShutdown option, (2)
Stoped NVIDIA Driver services, and (3)Installed the Windows UPHClean
application. The problem is still there. All suggestions welcomed.

NO - I typically don't install Driver updates specially NVIDIA updates as I
have been "bitten" in the past.

Just to clarify- I have installed all of the leatest drivers from the
Motherboard producers (ASUS) site. Also when I say "Slow to re-boot" I am
referring to the time between startup and the Boot menu appearing.

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You could look at the Error and Warnings in the Application and System
logs in Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

UPDATE

After furthur checking it appears that the ShutDown problem is related to my
Canon CanoScan 4200F scanner. If I unplug the USB cable to the scanner
Windows XP Pro shuts down in less than 45 seconds.

Have a look here for updated drivers:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=351&modelid=10445

You are keeping over many System Restore points.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore
on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb.
Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System
Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this time
find the slider and drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and exit.
When you get to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Thanks Gerry,

Actually I have the latest driver installed. The problem turned out to be
associated with the "Events" associated with the scanner buttons. Once I
deleted the Events and restored them everything started to work OK. The
system now shuts down in less than 45seconds.
