View Full Version : Upgrade partition

On one hard drive I have the first partition containing
Windows 98, and the second partition containing XP Pro.
In boot-up, it asks me which of the 2 partitions to go to.
I want to upgrade the 98 using its SP1, and then upgrade
it to Windows ME. I'd like to make sure that, when I do
the upgrade(s), that I don't interfere with the Windows XP
partition in any way.....
Could somebody give me the steps to follow? Naively, I
would hope that all I have to do is boot to the 98
partition, and insert the appropriate CD, but I fear
that would just be too simple.
Thank you.

Hi, Bill.
You are using what we call a "dual-boot system". That opening menu is
provided by WinXP. When you select WinXP, it continues loading by going
wherever C:\boot.ini points - in your case, to the second partition. When
you select Win98, it loads C:\bootsect.dos to replace the WinXP boot sector
and transfers control to it so that it can load Win98 from the first
partition.
If you boot to Win98 and then run Upgrade from the WinME CD-ROM, your
Win98-to-ME upgrade should go just fine. Afterwards, though, when you
reboot, you will go directly to WinME with no chance to select WinXP,
because WinME Setup will have overwritten the boot sector with the WinME
version, which never heard of WinXP or boot.ini. :>(
All is not lost, though. After WinME is running right, set your computer to
boot from CD and boot from the WinXP CD-ROM. Tell it to Repair your
installation. It will repeat the dual-boot setup procedure, restoring the
boot sector and updating C:\boot.ini.
For details, you might want to look at Doug Knox's page at:

If you have problems, please post back with details of what you did and what
happened.

Thank you, "R.C.".....When I summon some courage,
a few days from now, I'll follow your procedures.
