View Full Version : Upgrade Home to Pro

It looks like it is just as expensive to upgrade to XP Pro
from Home edition as it is to upgrade from Win 98. I went
from Win 98 to XP Home for about $100. Now it looks like
going to XP Pro is going to cost the full-boat $200 that
it would have cost me to go to Pro in the first place. Is
that right?

Yes.
Just out of curosity, why do you want to go to Pro?
The only real differance between the 2 versions is that Home will not join a
domain,
so unless you have a home domain (I do, that's why I bought it), you may not
need Pro.

There is very little you can't do with Home.
TCP/IP is the only networking protocol you need. Home does it just as well
as Pro.

No. To go from XP Home to XP Professional, just buy the XP
Professional Upgrade CD. This is a supported upgrade, and very
easy to do.

Also not true. There are a number of differences, mostly relating
to secirity and networking. See

It took me about an hour and a quarter to upgrade and download all the
WindowsUpdate fixes. XP Pro Upgrade in England costs as much in pounds
(near £200 for the best deal I could find) as it appears to do in dollars
in the States.

Ken,
You missed his point
If he spent $100 on the home upgrade, then spends another $100 on ythe Pro
upgrade, thats $200, what a full version of Pro would have cost in the first
place (although he would not have needed a full version).

No Ken, it IS true, in fact it is MORE expensive to upgrade to Pro.
The Pro upgrade is priced at $199.00,
The Home upgrade is $99.00.
So it is "just as expensive" to upgrade to the pro version, in fact it is
more expensive.

As I said Ken, the only REAL differance, I did not say the ONLY differance.

Jeez, don't you ever read any posts before you reply?

Yes, on re-reading his message, I think you're right, and I
