-- when i go to:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/help/33ecda79-b6aa-42af-8034-87be9322ac181033.mspx
and click "watch the demo", it opens media player classic which has the msg
" cannot render the file". If i try to open the file with wmp, i get the
error msg: "the file you are attempting to play has an extension (.wmv) that
does not match the file format." when i click yes, to play the file anyway,
I get: "win med player cannot play the file. The player may not support the
file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file"
When i click "web help", it opens with a windows media player error msg
COOD1199, (sometimes 1198). I tried downloading K-Lite codec pak 3.5.7 full
but it didnt help. It did place the media player classic on my desktop. the
file i am trying to play is 011_ie7tabhome.wmv I've gone about as far with
it as i can. problem is i don't know much about codecs

need help (big time)

sorry about not using "reply" for further help on my question. I'm new to
bulletin boards and newsgroups- this is only about my third time to use one.
will try to use the correct protocol this time. I'm responding to a reply
sent me from singapore web design. I went to the website provided but i'm
afraid i don't know anything about fast cashe and rich media content. I also
went to the 315959 link but i'm afraid that was over my head as well. I'm new
to codecs- is there any way you can explain how to use the info on the link
you provided

Hi,
It is advisable always to mention your Windows media player version and
your Operating system Version.
Try the obvious first then proceed with the reset:
Open the Windows media player and click Tools > options > file types tab >
check the file types you want to play or all of the file types to be played.

Here on this link you will find the error code and the solution:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/9series/playererrors.aspx

See the File association for the WMV on the Folder options >> File Type >>
and see if it is associated with any other application (s).
You can try this relevant group to your Q:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.video&cat=en_US_46ba7764-f7d5-4381-84c5-642792828590&lang=en&cr=US
HTH.
