It is possible that XP's in built burning software was turned off. To check
right click on your CD-Writer drive icon in My Computer. Select Properties
from the menu that pops open. You should have a windows with several tabs.
click the Recording Tab. Check the box "Enable CD recording on this device".
OK out of there.

But in my opinion you are far better off using third party burning software
than trying to mess with Windows in built software. There is a great free
CD/DVD burning program here http://www.cdburnerxp.se/ It is totally free and
has no spyware or other nags. Please not that I have no connection to this
software of author and do not provide any tech support for it.

I used to love CDBurnerXP before it produced a couple of coasters at
the time other software
worked just fine. So in this case I'd wait a year or so for software
writers to stabilize their burning engine :)

Arigato!

Yeah 2 coasters is a reason to avoid software. Did you think that perhaps
the media you were burning to was flawed?

The same media works fine in the same drive when recorded with Nero,
ImgBurn, Alcohol 120% or StarBurn. So I think it's CDBurnerXP burning
engine issues...

If the discs were coasters then how could you burn to them with the other
software? It is not uncommon for a spindle of discs, especially cheap media,
to have a few discs that are crap while the rest of the pack burns fine. It
is likely that the 2 coasters you made would have been coasters no matter
which software package you used to burn with.
