I have Windows XP-Professional with service pack 2. I have been using
Windows Movie Maker to edit videos I've shot (camera saves in .avi file) and
then write them out as NTSC quality video files which I then burn to DVD with
Nero Vision Express 3.

Recently however, Movie Maker started either exploding or locking up when I
try to import video files, or if it makes it past that stage when I try to
move them to the story line.

This seemed to start after I installed a xvid codec package that overwrote
some existing codec's. I don't know how to restore the originals without
completely re-installing windows which I am not real excited about doing.

Just for reference...you may want to read
the messages about Xvid files in the thread

No guarantees...but it may be worth a try to
do a system restore to a time before the
issue began.
