Display resolution

I have a dual boot PC running Win XP Pro on both partitions. I have had a 22
inch LCD wide screen running at a resolution of 1680 x 1050 connected to the
PC. The LCD display has failed and I need to temporarily replace it with an
old 15 inch CRT that can run at lower resolutions (such as 1024 x 768 or
1280 x 1024). My question is: Since the PC had been running at a higher
resolution that the CRT can handle and the LCD screen in inop, how can I
change the resolution to something the CRT can handle.

Hello Ralph,

What happens when you move the slider in:

Start => Settings => Control Panel => Display => Settings tab ?

(Or right-click your desktop and click on 'Properties' and then the
'Settings' tab)

Boot into VGA Mode or Safe Mode and then set the display
(resolution, refresh rate, and/or number of colors) to something that
your monitor can handle. Consult its manual to determine acceptable
settings. Reboot one more time, into Normal Mode.

Thanks for your reply. Need some help on some details.
1: Is it better to use VGA mode or Safe mode?
2: When I start up the computer, text appears asking me whether Windows on
Partition 1 or Partition 2 should be used. Should I press F8 before or after
making the choice?
3: When the computer boots up in 640 x 480 resolution, should I expect that
the Display window might be off screen. Will that be a problem? Also, should
I expect that my Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 will be operational?

If the window, or part of it, is off-screen, then hit "Alt-Space" then
"M" and then use the arrow keys to move the window to where you want it
and then hit "Return".

I'd try VGA Mode first, as Safe Mode may not load all of the necessary
video drivers that would allow you to make the adjustments needed.

Only you know the specifics of your dual-boot configuration, but I'd
think that, under normal circumstances, you'd start pressing <F8>
immediately after choosing the OS installation that needs the adjustment.

No.

Probably, for Safe Mode, if you have Legacy USB Support enabled in the
BIOS, and assuming that the mouse uses a USB dongle. For VGA Mode,
there shouldn't be any problem.
