With win xp SP2, when I go to windows update, nothing happens.

If I try to open IE7 it opens for a fraction of a second and disappears.

If I try to download a new IE7 it tells me I alreday have it and cannot
proceed.

If I try to erase the old IE7 it tells me cannot do because it is in
use. But all programs are shut down..

If I try to download and install IE6, no go, because I have a later version.

I appear to be stuck.

Any ideas most welcome

1. What is the virus/malware status of the machine? Be sure the computer is
clean - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

2. Try running IE with no add-ons:

Start > Run>iexplore.exe -extoff [enter] OR
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

3. What changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

Nothing done to PC other than shutdown at night and start up in morning.

Virus program shows no mal ware. run daily and at start up.

Ran IE (no add ons. Result was the same. Flash on monitor then nothing.

I could not find how to do the alternative: Start.run.iexzplore.exe..extoff.

But many thanks for your help.

Your (unnamed) "virus program" is not enough to know that your computer is
malware-free. If you don't want to go through the general removal steps I
already gave you, then you can try:

1. A System Restore to when things worked.
2. Post in the IE7 newsgroup:

microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

Good luck,
