Not sure where to start.....i am running an older pc with an 800mz AMD Althon
and i am having trouble with almost all my programs encountering problems on
a regular basis. I get the dispaly message " 'x' program has encountered a
problem and need to shut down." I get it all the time. I send the error
report for all the good it does. I run the same programs on my other newer
Dell and no issues at all. All the software is legal and i do not use the
internet for viewing illicet web sites. Also i have Wndows Live One Care
antivirus. I know this is vauge but does anyone else encouter these type of
problems?

Thanks

Mike

I recently did a system recovery on my system and "started over." It
is an older PC (Pavilion 563w) with an Intel Pentium 4 processor with
80gb HD and 512 memory. Had no problems until about 6 months ago.
Everything worked fine with the "new system" UNTIL I installed SP2 on
my system (with all the updates) and the first thing I lost was my
sound. Nothing. Zero. Nada. Then IE7 started acting "funny" (taking
too long to load, not loading at all, shuting down for no reason,
etc.) I even looked for updated plug and play drivers (as suggested
from MS) but no luck. I then made sure the Windows Firewall was OFF (I
have another Firewall) but that didn't seem to help. Then my computer
would completely shut down for no reason that I could see. Didn't seem
to matter what program I was using; it would just SHUT DOWN! It
usually took 3 - 6 attempts of restarting before it would "stick" back
on and I could work again. Then after it finally started up I would
open a program and it would shut down again. Finally I decided to
UNINSTALL SP2 and *presto!* Everything went back to "normal" just like
magic. No more shut downs, got my sound back, and IE6 works just fine.
So if you are running SP2 you may want to consider DUMPING it and
start there. See what happens. Just back everything up first! And
don't forget to get the critical updates from MS. You can always d/l
and install it again later on if desired. Hope this helps.
