quick launch bar

I have an ongoing feud with a friend who swears that icons
on the Quick Launch bar are running in the background like
the icons in the system tray are.

I say they are just shortcuts and are not actually runing
until you click them.

Who wins?

Tell him to right click the system tray, and select Task manager, then
select the Processes tab. that is everything running in the back ground
