Hi there, I am trying to upgrade to the latest version of Windows Live
Messenger.

It says I have to install "windows update agent 5.8.02469" and tries to
download it. It goes off in a loop saying my version of IE isn't up to date
(it's the latest) and says I can't download "windows update agent 5.8.02469".

I suspect this is as it's a work laptop and has a windows update blocker
installed as my company does it's own packaged patch management.

How do I upgrade Windows Live Messenger in this case?

Thanks

Do yourself a favor, don't fight the work admin's settings. Ask them for
legit help. If you hack the Messenger in you are going to hit some of the
security settings. Messenger updates can be downloaded for install by your
admin.

This is definitely a frustrating error. Basically Windows Live (and Live
Messenger) require a specific Windows Update (KB/sp) to be installed. Of
course rather then tell you exactly what they need, Microsoft just
encourages you to run Windows update and get everything. But if you are
the type of person who can't do this (or won't, as you might like to
pick and choose your updates), it is difficult.

I saw a direct link to this specific update (kb number) on the web some
time ago, and unfortunately I haven't had any luck finding it again
since. But basically all you need is this one small update and you
should be good to go. The trick is finding out which of the many to
choose from, is the one you want.

Goodluck.
