I have just re-installed XP Professional from scratch (to an unformatted
drive). Everything works fine until I install Service Pack 1. Although my
system runs okay with SP1, I have noticed that application take longer to
open i.e. Outlook, Norton Antivirus. My hard drive access light is on solid
as if Windows is scanning for something or something is being cached?? I've
seen an update (811493) which relates to performance problems but this
update isn't installed. I've looked at the detailed list of patches/fixes,
updates etc that are all included within the SP1 but I still can't determine
which one of the included updates within SP1 is causing this initial
slowdown of my system. Once for example Outlook has been loaded (after the
10 sec. extra wait time), if I close it down and restart Outlook a few
seconds later it opens almost instantly or opens as quickly prior to the
installation of SP1. Any ideas?

Give the new setup a few days to perform the self-optimization. If
impatient, try running defrag a routinely over the next few days.
