Backup Pre-Installed Win XP Home

I have purchased a reconditioned PC as a gift for a
friend. It came with Win XP Home installed.

Can I burn a self booting back-up CD containing the
Operating System that can be used to re-install XP in
case it becomes necessary? If yes, how?

The PC should have been supplied with one of a few things:-
Either
1. A Full Windows XP Home Edition CD ROM (either Retail or OEM)
2. A Recovery CD to allow you to restore the PC to as shipped condition (may
or may not be destructive to data and apps on system)
3. A recovery partition and some way of using it to restore the PC to as
shipped

In the first case the CD is bootable
In the second 2 - OEMs sometime provide a utility to allow you to make a CD
to do the restore or to reinstall certain applications.

If you did not get any of the 3 above contact the vendor to discuss if you
have a properly licensed copy of Windows XP and how you are supposed to
restore it.

XP does not have the software natively installed to do that. However if you
use third party software you can create a self booting "recovery disk set"
similar to those distributed with some new systems.
Common programs that can make full system backups directly to CD are
Norton Ghost 2003 www.symantec.com
Drive Image 2002 www.powerquest.com
Image is a fraction of the cost of the above and works nicely
