I copy files to a CD for backup. Usually I send the entire directory. When
creating the CD, all files are flagged Read Only. Copying back requires
resetting the Read Only attribute.

Is there any setting within XP Pro to cancel the Read Only attribute when
copying files.

The Read-only attribute should be removed automatically when you copy the
file from the CD-R to your Hard Drive. It does for me. Directories will
display the Read only attribute but the files themselves should not.

(By the way XP sets all directories with a Read-only attribute, even if you
create a new directory, this could be a design flaw but it is irrelevant and
you can still make changes as desired.)
