Why does Microsoft Media Encoder 9 always crash?

I am trying to convert Mpeg2 files, saved on my hard drive and originating
from my Sony Handycam, to wmv files which I want to play in Movie Maker.

Unfortunately encoder 9 crashes after finish.

Does this have something to do with codecs?

What should I do to make this simple process work?

I don't know why Windows Media Encoder is
crashing...could it be a system resource issue
because of file size?

Interestingly you rerouted me to my first port of call which was
virtualdubmeg2.

This has worked tonight however I have just learned that this guidance is
given for a NTSC system-any suggestions for a PAL system?

I followed your instructions and downloaded VdubMod. I resized and then
compressed my video and I now have my video saved as a .avi file. (It was
originally an mpeg-2). I can now view it on Windows Media Player but still
cannot import it into WMM. I get the same error: "the file C:\Documents and
Settings\...\Megan round 1.avi cannot be imported because the codec required
to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried
to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and
then try to import the file again." What am I missing or doing wrong?

If you drag/drop your .avi in the "Container" field...
The required Codec should be displayed where
it says...Codec / Name...

It says Codec: dvsd Name DVC/DV Video and the status says Codec(s) are
installed. I downloaded the Panasonic codec in your article. However,
Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility says there are no MPEG-2 decoders on
my system. I used the Panasonic codec to save a second .avi file in
VirtualDubMod.

There is no volume on my avi file - I am assuming I need to find an audio
codec as well?

I really appreciate your assistance! I am amazed at how bloody complicated
and confusing this whole process is. All I want to do is combine video clips
of my daughters into a movie on WMM. It should not be this difficult.

An MPEG-2 Decoder is what allows your
system to *Play* a DVD. That wouldn't help
in the current situation. If you do wish to play
DVDs...the following freebie may be worth a try:

VLC media player
http://www.videolan.org/

I would still suggest that personally...I would
download and install the K-Lite Mega Codec
Pack.

Pack. I will play around the weekend with WMM and see what I can do.
