View Full Version : How can I repair an apparently damaged zipped file, so that I can successfully unzip it?

Hi,

Prior to reformatting my hard drive to try to avoid the numerous errors that
my computer was making, I backed up then zipped my most important
information. I zipped the backup file, because I have been unable to get
the Windows XP backup facility to compress the data, the way the Windows 98
backup program used to do, and the original file would have been too big
for my backup storage medium.

However, when I tried to unzip the backup file, the zip program gave me the
following error message near the end of the unzip process: bad CRC 1bd65e71
(should be 76036e33). I was subsequently unable to view the contents. How
can I repair the zipped file, so that I can successfully unzip it?

Sincerely,

Hi

If you have a 'bad CRC' error message with a zip file, I'm afraid that =
the file has had it - sorry. There is no way to repair that file.

Hi,

Thanks for your response, tho I must confess that it is horribly
disappointing.

To try to salvage something from the wreckage, how can I check a zipped file
for errors, prior to using it as a backup after a reformat, so that I don't
suffer from this problem again?

Hi

What are you using a zip file to 'backup'? The larger the zip file the =
more CRC errors are more likely to occur. If you use Winzip there is an =
option to check files after they have been zipped up to make sure that =
those files have been compressed properly.

Hi,

>What are you using a zip file to 'backup'?

I was using the WinZip to compress a backup file containing my most
important data. I did so, because I was storing my data on another computer
to which this one is networked and which has a small hard drive, and I have
been unable to get my Windows XP backup utility to compress data the way the
one in Windows 98 used to do. I put the zipped file on the other computer,
because this computer was giving trouble writing to both CDRWs and floppy
disks.

>The larger the zip file the more CRC errors are more likely to occur.

I never knew so. It was, indeed, a very large file, 313 mb.

>If you use Winzip there is an option to check files after they have been
zipped up to make sure that those files have been compressed properly.

I never knew so, otherwise I would, indeed, have used the option. Thank you
for the advice you have given.
