Is it just missing for your user account or is it also missing for
Default User?

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in
Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151/en-us

Hope this helps.

Click on Apply and then OK. Exit and restart the computer for the change
to take effect.. In Windows Explorer if you search then search My
Computer. However, I would navigate manually and not use the search
function.

Can be caused because of a Virus attach which corrupt the registry entry for
Show Hidden Files and Folders.

http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/show-hidden-files-and-folders-not-working/

Moreover, you can still access the Local Settings folders by typing Local
Settings in Address bar. For instance, you are in folder:

\Documents and Settings\Sam\

In Address Bar type Local Settings in front of Sam and Press enter key,
like:

\Documents and Settings\Sam\Local Settings

Hope this help, let us know!

Thanks Rajiv.
The second option indicated on the page you give us:
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/show-hidden-files-and-folders-not-working/

worked for me...
