You may wish to perform a "tune-up" that may help:

1. Perform a DISK CLEANUP:
(Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup)

2. Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. In the Command
Prompt window type: CHKDSK /F , and hit enter, answer "yes" and
reboot your computer.

3. Afterward, perform a DEFRAG of your hard drive.

Why do you need to delete a lot of files? Are you running out of room?
Having a few too many files is a better situation than having one less
important file that Windows or a program needs.

Is 51,000 too many files? No. I have about 14,000 files in my Windows
folder and about 43,500 files in Program Files. Doesn't even begin to
include files in other folders and this XP setup is running just fine.

See Nicholas' reply about running some of the maintenance tools. Files in
the Temp folder can accumulate over time and are not needed. The disk
cleanup tool will offer to remove these for you.

If space is still a concern after running Disk Cleanup, uninstall programs
that you do not use. Move older data off of the hard drive and on to other
media (CD or zip disk, for example). OR expand your storage space by
upgrading to a larger drive or installing a second drive.

Some of us have over 200,000 files. Would have been useful if original
poster included drive size and programs.

Exactly the point I was trying to make, Donald. :) The number of files
isn't important unless there is a pressing concern about storage space.
