Hi all,
Occasionally I like to play Delta Force 1/2/3 or 4 to break the monotony of
work.
But I do have problems with "jerky" movements and slow response times when
using the mouse, resulting in getting myself "killed" quite frequently.
I use Task Manager to close running programs but there are loads of
processes still running. Can I close any of these down to assist in
gameplaying and/or is there a program I can buy/download which will give me
the various options of useage with the click of a button?

Many thanks in anticipation,
Ken

Best thing is to have a system that exceeds the minimum game requirements.
Closing system processes can cause you problems ...plus you'll most likely
have to reboot or re-log back in to re-gain the canceled processes.

It seems like your video card might be the problem.

Delta Force 2:
Minimum System
Pentium MMX, Celeron, Pentium2, Pentium3, or Athlon processor at 233MHz or
higher.
64MB RAM (96MB for 3D Acceleration)
500MB hard disk space
Recommended System: Matrox G200/G400, TnT, TnT2, Rage 128, or Savage3D

Delta Force 3:
Pentium II, Celeron, or equivalent 400 MHz processor
Windows 95, 98, 2000, or Me
64 MB RAM with AGP video card
200 MB hard disk space
4x CD-ROM
Direct3D-compatible video card (including 3dfx Voodoo2, 3, or 5; NVIDIA TNT,
TNT2, or GeForce2; ATI Rage Fury Maxx; or Matrox G400)
Windows-compatible sound card (Voice-over-Net requires full duplex sound
card)
Windows-compatible mouse
ISP required to play up to 50 others over the Internet
IPX and LAN support

Most decent games these days require a reasonable hi-end graphic card such
as an nVidia GForce2 or Radion, as most of the processing is of a visual
nature. Delta force was too much even for my old 16MB Voodoo card.
Most workstations on the other hand, have crap onboard graphic adapters that
just cannot handle the amount of graphic information that needs to be
crunched in the shortest possible time in a game - which is why you're
experiencing the jerks - its a frame rate issue.
You're probably getting 1 or 2 frames per second when there's a lot of
action, when it needs to be in the 40-50 region to experience smooth
playing.
Solutions hmmmm. Convince your boss that either getting you or letting you
fit an nVidia FX graphic card will be a worthwhile investment maybe? Its
worth a try....
Good luck

Thanks guys. I have a NVIDIA GeForce MX 440 which I thought might do the
trick. But I'll have to bite the bullet and buy a new graphics card.

The MX440 while not cutting edge should still give respectable results. I
had this vision of you using an onbard intel display adapter with about 8 MB
system RAM reserved. That is., luxurious by some corporate standards.
Try D/L ing 3DMark 2000 (there are later versions, but that one should suit
the vintage of your card) to benchmark your system - with a respectable CPU
(say 1.6 -2GHz or so on a modern system) you should achieve a score of about
9 - 10K before you start tweaking any settings/resolutions.
A final thought - are you using a USB modem and USB mouse together?

Chek,
Yes I'm using USB modem and mouse. Could the problem be a conflict? Also, my
processor is an AMD Athlon 760.....would upgrading that help?

Ken
Updating the processor would undoubtedly help, but as a cheaper solution
(cos DF1 should run adequately at least on a 760 processor) try using a PS2
mouse if possible to see if that helps at all.
Its not so much a conflict between the mouse and the modem exactly, more a
case of resource sharing and
waiting-to-process-the-inputs time if they're on a single USB bus.
Oh, and with that CPU, I'll drop your 3D Mark expected score down to 3-4000.
I forgot to mention the URL for the 3D 2000 benchmarker before - its
www.madonion.com.
Hope this helps

Why? The NVIDIA card is very good.
