Hello
MSN Messenger and Windows messenger are started together. Windows messenger
doesn't sign in. What is the difference between MSN Messenger and Windows
messenger?
Windows messenger is starting when Outlook Express starts although
"Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" is unchecked in "Options" window
in Outlook Express.

MSN Messenger is Microsoft's version of AOL Instant Messenger while the Windows
Messenger service is part of the OS.

There are two (2) different Messenger programs. The latest version
of "Windows Messenger" is 4.7. The latest version of "MSN Messenger"
is 6.0.

I still don't see any substantial difference in features between Windows
Messenger" 4.7 and "MSN Messenger" 6.0. Why does Microsoft is making both
of them for Windows XP?

On Wed, 6 Aug 2003 16:18:28 +0400, Dmitriy Kopnichev pondered exceedingly, then
took quill in hand and carefully composed...

Windows Messenger is specifically for XP and ties into its features. MSN
Messenger is NOT specifically for XP and will not use some XP features that
Windows Messenger will.

My advice: go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove MSN
Messenger. You will probably need to re-install Windows Messenger. Unless
recent upgrades have changed things, it will have to be uninstalled first. This
site shows how you can do that:

http://messenger.jonathankay.com/allsteps.aspx?ID=7

Then reinstall from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/download.asp

IMHO, Microsoft should settle on ONE messenger and relieve this confusion for
once and all. I can't believe they lack the coding talent to incorporate the
features of both versions into one.

I have used both. For my money (none!) MSN Messenger is clearly
superior, with better camera/microphone, file transfer, etc. support.
Past that there is little difference.

Why are there two messengers? It's a legal/antitrust thing. MS cannot
offer just Windows messenger since it would cloud the issue of an
independent (not tied to the OS) MSN as an ISP, thus it needs MSN
messenger to counter the charge that it is using Windows as a vehicle to
conquer its competitors like Yahoo and AOL in messenging.

I believe that Windows Messenger will eventually bite the dust since it
begs the issue of the OS unfairly competing with competitive non-OS
based messenging. If the EU requires MS to offer all or none of
messengers on its destop, Windows Messenger goes away, and MSN, Yahoo,
AOL messengers will all be available as a user choice on the desktop.
