View Full Version : Old LAN Connection

Hello,

I am using XPSP2, and DO NOT have any connection problems with my LAN that I
use to connect to the Internet over DSL.

However, I believe some hidden LAN connections are keeping me from being
able to see the status of an active LAN connection. I can see the status
when I am in
safe mode with networking, but not in normal mode.

I know I have some hidden LAN's because when I set up a new LAN to try to
fix the problem I get a message something like "if I use the same DNS, etc.,
as the hidden LAN, and then reconnect it, I will have problems". I will not
be reconnecting any hidden LAN's because I only have one card.

I have deleted the old LAN's from my Network folder, but that is somehow
still allowing them to remain hidden. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of
hidden LAN's?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi B.If you click start, run.type in msconfig,ok.This will bring up a box that
has tabs on the top.Click on services tab. These are all the services that are
running on your pc.Search the list.If you see the old lans on the list
uncheck the box beside it.You can also click on the startup tab and see if
they,re on that list.If so uncheck them.Be very carful. These are the programs
that run your pc.So don,t shut off anything except the lan boxes. When you
have selected what you want off click apply, close. This will prompt you to
restart your pc.When your pc comes back on a dialog box will appear.Just
click do not show on the left then close. If you have found the lans you were
looking for in there and unchecked them. They will no longer be in the system
programs.Hope this helps.TERRY.

Select Show Hidden Devices via the Device Manager in Save Mode. Disable
them, then delete.

Open a Command Prompt window and try setting the
devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices environment variable and then running device
manager from the command prompt as per MS KB 241257 at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241257.

You could try deleting all the NIC devices shown in device manager,
rebooting the PC, and letting XP find the NIC and reinstall the device
drivers. Jot down all the NIC settings before doing this in case of problems
after XP reboots.

You did say that you only have one card (NIC). Does the motherboard have a
built in NIC? You may need to disable the motherboard NIC if you are using
a NIC you have installed.

Actually that is just what I did and that is where the problem arises
(please see my original message). I took my old hard drive and put it in my
new computer (same kind as my old). XP recognized the card on the new
machine, I configured it, got a message about the old connection (which
isn't really there, it's just on my hard drive)being hidden and that if I
activate it it would conflict with the new one. So I tried deleting them
all, as you suggest, and that just gave me another hidden connection.

You can manually remove the phantom adapter entries at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\<AdapterName>

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\NWLinkIPX\NetConfig

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\<Adapter or Manufacturer Name>

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\NetworkCards

Reboot to apply the changes.

In my device manager I have a "1394 Net Adapter" and a "Broadcom NetXtreme
gigabit Ethernet" listed. I do not find either of those in the first
registry key you list. Any suggestions there?

I do not find the second key you list. The closest to NWLinkIPX is NWLnkFlt
or NWLnkFwd. Any suggestions here?

I do not find either of the Network cards listed above in the 3rd key you
mention. Any suggestions here?

I do find one additional listing for the "Broadcom NetXtreme gigabit
Ethernet" in the fourth key you list.

I'm not sure we are on the right page though. In my Network connections I
have a "Local Area Connection 3" listed and it is 1 & 2 I am trying to get
rid of. I find keys in the registry with 1 or 2 listed. I delete those but
it doesn't fix my problem. Remembering back to the original post, the
problem is that although my network (LAN) connection works fine for me to be
on the Internet, I can never see the status. I click on "status" in the
Right mouse button context menu for the connection and nothing ever shows up
on the screen.

To rid your computer of the phantom adaptor follow the instructions
here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269155 If after doing the above
you still have problems then delete the registry entries for the network
adapter.
