View Full Version : Netowrk printer install Failure

Hi

I have an OKI C5400n printer setup on a Home Network. For months it has been
printing perfectly and without any issue. Last week it suffered a serious
failure where it would crash an application when the print command was
issued. Other drivers do not cause this issue so I am fairly sure the driver
is an issue.

To resolve it I tried to reintall it. However the reinstall also failed at
the point after the driver files are copied over into the sytem32 area. The
error reported at that point is "The parameters are invalid". It then stops
and requires Task manager to stop the operation. In the printers and faxes
folder in control panel the printer is there, but when I select properties it
comes up with a read exception error and a divide by zero error code (?).

I thought I would try another way of installing it so I used the standard
Add printer option. It errors again with cannot find printer on network.

Under my network places I can see it and can attach to it via the web
interface is has to give printer information.

I went back to the vendor. They gave me a document which they said would
solve this issue, but I had already taken those steps already before
contacting them.

The vendor has responded with :
"this type of fault is typically related to a print services issue within
the windows printing environment. The installation of any third party driver
software is in effect like bolting driver software onto the backbone of an
operating system. The error "The parameters are invalid" suggests the driver
software components are unable install because something is preventing the
install.

Because the error occurred with the old driver and the latest downloaded
driver it is safe to assume the fault lies within the windows print service
area, which necessitates a call to Microsoft. "

Something is preventing the install?
What would prevent an install?
And while it is safe to make an assumption, can we assume that the vendor
will fix the issue? Maybe and maybe not.
But I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions or ideas on this
problem

I have installed the XP PRO SP3 and have all the updates as well. I can't
roll back to pre SP3 and it sounds like I might have to do a full reinstall
of XP Pro if it is found that the updates are an issue.

But before I do that, has anyone seen or heard of such an issue and is there
a solution?

Thanks in advance for your help.

remove the OKI stuff using their uninstall programs. OKI has a language
monitor that may be loaded by the spooler which might prevent an update
since the file is in use.

If the uninstall application do not remove it, you would need to edit the
registry and restart the spooler before you could delete the old file.

Hi Alan
Thanks for the response

Everything within that link with the exception of the cleansplr action I
have already done.

I have not yet worked out why there is a failure for the add printer
function to find the printer claiming the printer has lost connection, or why
the install program can find the printer using the ip address.

funnily enough the cleansplr program did delete all of my printers. This has
given me the chance to see if this affects other printers.

I managed to install a PDF printer without difficulty.

I am going to try and move the printer closer to try a local install and see
if that has any issues.

Can you think of anything else that may be an issue?
thanks again.

Are you connecting to a machine sharing the printer or connecting to the
network card on the printer?

My previous failures with OKI just lead to removing the data out of the
registry and installing the latest driver version and that's been working
for a while

Hi Alan
It is connected using the NIC card. Both the printer and the computer I am
installing the drivers on are on the same router/switch.

I agree with you that this should not be so difficult. I will have to get
the hammer out soon and beat it up!

Thanks

Is the router correctly assigning the printer an IP address or is the
printer on a static IP, if so, does the router 'see' it.

Hi Cari
The address is assigned by the router. I am sure it can be seen as I
mentioned below I can access it through the My Networks and the intall
program for the driver also sees it when looking for it.

I am going to connect it using a USB port to see if the same issue happens.
If it does then I think I have a different issue that is causing this failure.
thanks

I have just managed to install the printer locally via USB.

Cari you suggestion about the switch may be on the ball. But why would it
suddenly assign the wrong IP address?
thanks
