You can download the vista codecs package(works on XP and Vista) from
http://shark007.net/vistacodecpackage.html
This should allow you to use Windows Media Player for MP4. Or download the
VLC media player(do a Google search for it).

Another option is the SMplayer
http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/
It's similar to VLC, and free too.
