Services – Manual Settings

WXP Pro SP3, 3.60 GHz, 2 GB RAM Single User Desktop DSL with Wireless
Connection to laptop. 2 HDs and Toshiba 250 External Drive

I Have the Following Startup Type Settings on “Manual” but …
I’ve found their Status Changes Immediately on Reboot/Shutdown to Status:
Started.

1. Application Layer Gateway
2. COM + Event System
3. HTTP SSL
4. Network Connections
5. Network Location Awareness
6. Remote Access Connection Mgr
7. SSDP Discovery Service
8. Telephony
9. Terminal Services

My Question is: As these particular Manual settings change to Started,
Should I change these “Manual” Settings to Automatic?

One I just noticed on “Disabled” that I now question what must have been my
decision:

10. Security Centre … I have it Disabled - it "Monitors System Security
Settings and Configuration".

Hmmm would this have been converted to “Disabled” because I HAD the WXP
Firewall Disabled as I was using Norton Internet Security 2008 as my
Firewall??
As of a few hours ago, I now have the free version 8.0 of AVG which doesn’t
appear to have a Firewall.

I just reactivate the WXP Pro SP3 Firewall and Shutdown but … this setting
is still on Disabled. I’m now presuming it’s ME that has to change this to
Automatic???

These setting are so confusing to a Novice. Well, just a stupid one I
guess.

Thx for any suggestions.

Mine are not a lot different than yours:
1. man. n/s (not started)
2. man. st.
3. man. n/s
4. man. st.
5. man. st.
6. auto
7. disabled (no home network)
8. man. st.
9. disabled (single user; no home network; no remote desktop)
10. My security center service is auto, and I'm running Zone Alarm instead
of the Windows Firewall. This service doesn't offer any protection per se,
just notifies you if you don't have a firewall or anti-virus program
running.

There are a number of sites that explain what each service does, and what is
recommended by the person who wrote the article. Operative word is
'recommended.' This is just the author's decision- it may or may not apply
to your situation. Here's a couple to get you started, LOL:

Al 9 services listed should be set to Manual.

The Windows Firewall and Security Center should be set to Automatic.

Dumping Norton Internet Security will help system performance. What
anti-spyware programme do you have installed? AVG 8.00 (Free ) only has
an anti-virus capability. You can obtain paid AVG versions to incude an
anti-spyware capability but there are freeware options from other
software houses also avalable. The Windows Firewall in conjuction AVG 8
(Free) works fine here.

Thx for all this work Tom.
Question: See your
No. 6 Remote Access Connection Mgr yours set on Automatic.
If u don't have a Network, what is your reasoning to set this on Automatic?
I'm not criticizing. LOL I'm curious to learn your opinion/reasoning.

Whatta night! I'm crosseyed reading all these Settings and I haven't even
got to these Sites. I made these decisions over 2 yrs ago and now don't have
a clue what MY reasoning behind some of these Settings. Unlike you, me
thinks I did a lot of guessing.

Must be a good Site, Wolf and Kayman both recommended it! Thx for the
Help Fellows. I'll get to it but not tonight. I can barely see after going
through these Services.

That's something that someone should devise ... a Site listing Recommended
Computer Fix-it Sites! They're likely out there ... Somewhere. ...

"The Windows Firewall and Security Center should be set to Automatic"

Thx Gerry, I changed this one from Disabled to Automatic and this Service
changed immediately to Started. I think, but will know for sure later, that
this is shown to me by Spybot S&D each time I scan. I presumed it was
because I had WXP Firewall turned Off due to having the Norton Firewall
activated. I didn't think, not unusual, of it being an entry under Services.

I have two more on Manual that shows they have Started ... I have an
External HD & Laptop Wireless Connection to my Desktop - one User.

11. Removable Storage - Mine Started Manual
12. Logical Disk Mgr Administrative Services - Mine Started Manual

I have the following Services Disabled - I checked them over and they still
appear to me to bear the accurate "Disabled" Setting. If you would be so
kind as to indicate any suggested change next to these entries I'd sure
appreciate it and it would save me hours checking those Sites as well as a
tremendous help to many Readers.
Yes I know I'm taking advantage but ... Please! LOL My eyes are tearing
from going through these Services.

1. Alerter
2. Clipboard
3. Error Reporting Service
4. Messenger
5. Net.TCP Port Sharing Service
6. Network DDE
7. Network DDE DSDM
8. Portable Media Serial Number Service
9. QBCF Monitor Service
10. Routing - Remote Access Telnet
11. Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service.

As to Anti Spyware. I've always had it in a paid AntiVirus program ie Norton.
I have been using Lavasoft Ad-Aware Plus which I liked until they issued the
new Anniversary version - I was having problems with it so uninstalled with
the intention of reinstalling the previous version. One of the Posters here
had problems and thought it was their uninstalled/installed procedure in
their program so I'll try installing it again. This time it won't be
necessary to uninstall Ad-Aware.

I discovered several entries of Call Backs in the Housecall Micro Trend free
Scan log of 25Jan09 I saved. It says there's 279 "ProcessSystemCallback"
Found Threat infection: Adware_MemWatcher. Note Adware not Ad-Aware.

Maybe this isn't Ad-Aware except that I've never had such entries before
installing Ad-Aware's new version. Too bad I'm unable to send this log to
u.

Besides Ad-Aware Plus I have Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster. I had Spyware
Dr until a week ago and I'm not renewing my Subscription.
Spyware Dr continually left 18.2 MB of garbage files in it's avcb\temp
folder each day including Adobe Acrobat Reader 5 (I have Adobe Flash Player
10 & Adobe Reader 9 ) and it would clear them out during the night. I
contacted Tech Support but was told their program wouldn't do that. I
offered to send JPGs on two occasions when I asked for a solution but they
weren't the least bit interested.

I still have numerous JPGs if anyone is interested. Better still if u have
Spyware Dr go to the Secunia Site and run their Scan to see if u have these
files. Surely I couldn't be the only one that had them installed. It
happened every day from late Oct to end of Dec08.

My Gosh - I better quit or I'll end up publishing this book. ... Thx again
Gerry.

In general it is best to not change default service settings. Services
are interdependent and many users make changes not understanding or even
not knowing how these interdependencies work. They think it will improve
performance but it often does the reverse because it results in system
errors.

11. Removable Storage - Manual is correct.
12. Logical Disk Mgr Administrative Services -Manual is correct. If it
starts it should stop after it's allotted task has been completed.

In Services if you have not done so select View, Details. Also select
View, Customised and select the Extended rather than the Standard tab
and close. Place the cursor on Logical Disk Mgr Administrative Services
and note the Description. It makes my earlier point that the Service
should stop.

1. Alerter -Disabled is correct.
2. Clipboard -Disabled is normally correct but see reference in
Description to Remote Computers.
3. Error Reporting Service - Often users disable this service but it
should be set to Automatic. Users see the resulting Error Report
interruptions as annoying and disable the Service. However, a better
response is to look at the Report in Event Viewer and resolve the
problem. However, interpreting Reports is an acquired skill many users
do not possess and this leads to frustration and disabling the service.
4. Messenger -Disabled is correct.
5. Net.TCP Port Sharing Service -Disabled is correct.
6. Network DDE -Disabled is correct.
7. Network DDE DSDM -Disabled is correct.
8. Portable Media Serial Number Service -Change to Manual.
9. QBCF Monitor Service -This Services relates to Quick Books. What is
the status of this software on your computer?
10. Routing - Remote Access Telnet -Disabled is correct.
11. Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. -Change to Manual.

These are all what I would normally expect to see. If your computer
performs a non-typical home user function they could be set differently.

I will write again this evening regarding the remainder of your message.

For grins 'n' giggles, I tried stopping the service and it wouldn't let me,
possibly because I had an internet connection open or because it's needed
and Windows wouldn't let it be shut down. Rather than going through a lot of
contortions to see if I COULD get it to shut down, I just left it on.

Oh, no, believe me, there was a LOT of guessing and trial and error on my
part in the earlier years. After a while, I started doing exactly what you
are doing now- asking and researching. There were a couple of PCs I almost
turned into paperweights because I was too proud (OK, pig-headed) to ask for
assistance. Keep it up, you're doing fine'

If you really serious about Internet security you need to educate yourself.
It's best to listen to experts with proved credentials. Unfortunately,
their publications aren't as 'easy' to read as commercialized sponsored
issues. You won't find one-click solutions but (initially) you may find
implementing recommended Internet security measurements somewhat
overwhelming and tedious. It's best to do this in stages (small steps).

For WinXP the most dependable defenses are:-
1. Do not work as Administrator; For day-to-day work routinely use a
Least-privileged User Account (LUA).
Applying the Principle of Least Privilege to User Accounts on WindowsXP
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb456992.aspx

2. Secure (Harden) your operating system.

3. Don't expose services to public networks.

4. Keep your operating system (and all software on it) updated/patched.

http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

5. Reconsider the usage of IE and OE.
Utilizing another browser application and e-mail provider can add to the
overall security of the OS.
Consider:Opera, FireFox or Seamonkey and PegasusMail,Thunderbird or WLM.

5a.Secure (Harden) Internet Explorer.

6. Review your installed 3rd party software applications/utilities; Remove
clutter, *including* all Anti-WhatEver ware and 3rd party software
personal firewall application (PFW) - the one which claims:
"It can stop/control malicious outbound traffic".

7. If on dial-up Internet connection, activate the build-in firewall.
Windows XP: How to turn on your firewall.

7a.Configure Windows by using:
Seconfig XP 1.1

7b.If on high-speed Internet connection use a Router and implement
Countermeasures against DNSChanger.
http://extremesecurity.blogspot.com/2008/06/use-default-password-get-hijacked.html

7c.And (just in case) Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) has been superseded by
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA2) and/or IEEE 802.11.

8. Utilize one (1) each 'real-time' anti-virus and anti-spy
application.
Consider: Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic - Free
and Windows Defender.

9. Employ back-up application(s).
Windows XP Backup Made Easy
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspx
Consider: Acronis, Casper or Norton Ghost and ERUNT.

9a.Utilize vital operating system monitor utilities/applications but you
need to know the nature or meaning of what those programs are
disclosing.
Consider: Process Explorer, AutoRuns, TCPView, WALLWATCHER, Wireshark,
Port Reporter, Regmon/Filemon or Process Monitor, rootkit detection
tools like Rootkit Revealer, Gmer Rootkit or Hook Analyzer.
There are more but beware computer forensics is a quite difficult and
complex field.

10.Routinely practice Safe-Hex.
http://www.claymania.com/safe-hex.html

The least preferred defenses are:-
Myriads of popular anti-whatever (*real-time*) applications and staying
ignorant.

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003
products and Norton 360 from your computer.

Good luck :)
