View Full Version : Saving Notepad to My Files Folder

I created a Folder, in My Documents, and named it, My Files. And whenever I
saved a Notepad document, it USED to always automatically, save it to, My
Files.

However, recently, something changed; not a big deal, but I am wondering why
it now automatically saves to the entire My Documents Folder instead??

Thanks,
Jean

I know of no way that Notepad ever could have automatically saved to a
subfolder
of My Documents. So, whatever it was doing, is something Windows doesn't do
on its own.

To re-train it, you just need to open it from or "Save As" to that
folder, and its location should be remembered again. The Open command
within Notepad will default to "My Documents", but if you open the file
from another folder, or, let's say, from a Desktop shortcut to that
file, in the new folder, the current location of the file will be the
Save location. To check, click File, "Save As" to assure that the
proper folder is the Save location.

On my machines (XP and 2k), notepad saves to the folder where I last saved.

Try this little program. I've used it for years and liked it so much
I eventually bought the full pro version. The free version is much
nicer than Notepad.

You're right; I just tested it on mine. I never noticed that before!

The last saved-to location is stored here:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\LastVisitedMRU]

I already told you how. Again, this is the only way...

-----------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\LastVisitedMRU]
"a"=hex:6e,00,6f,00,74,00,65,00,70,00,61,00,64,00,2e, 00,65,00,78,00,65,00,00,\
00,43,00,3a,00,5c,00,44,00,6f,00,77,00,6e,00,6c,00 ,6f,00,61,00,64,00,00,00
"MRUList"="a"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\*]
"a"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\{username}\\My Documents\\My Files\\txt.txt"
"MRUList"="a"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\txt]
"a"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\{username}\\My Documents\\My Files\\txt.txt"
"MRUList"="a"

-----------------------------------------------------

Move "MyFiles.reg" to "My Documents", then added it to the registry's run key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run]
"MyFiles"="C:\\WINDOWS\\regedit.exe /s \"C:\\Documents and Settings\\{username}\\My Documents\\MyFiles.reg\""
