Hi

I am unable to find the Cookies folder but my cookies are enabled and they
work!

Of course I looked in Documents & settings\User\Cookies

Thank you for any advice

May I ask why you're asking, Samuel?

If you enable 'Show Hidden Files and Folders,' you'll be able to "see" at
least one folder named Cookies (in Windows Explorer) but that's not
necessarily where all your cookies "live."

In IE8: Internet Options -> Browsing history -> Settings -> Current
location

This shows where is the browser's TIF (Temporary Internet Files). Look
there. They even provide a View Files button to show you that folder.
Most cookies are stored there.

If cookies are not in that folder then they are in a subfolder in this hidden folder:

"C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5"

Cookies are not stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder!
What happens is that when you go to the Temp Inet Files folder you are
treated to a "user friendly" view that contains an "index" of both Temp
Inet Files (like .gif .htm and such) and cookie files (which are.txt files).
However, this is only an index and although the .gif's and the .htm's look
like they are there they are actually in subfolders within Temp Inet
Files\Content.IE5\... in folders called something like GLUF0X6F, and the
cookies will be somewhere else entirely! If you open a command-prompt from
that folder and type "dir /a" (/a for all) you will see what I mean. All
there really is in there is a file called "Index.dat"

Open Regedit.exe (by typing it into the "run" box) and go to the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders

Under this key you have a list of all the "special" folders and their
locations on your computer - look up "cookies" and you will find there the
exact path to them. It takes two minutes, max.

Didn't say they weren't, but that's not necessarily where the cookies are
really located.

Hi ju.c
No, they are NOT (physically) stored in the "Temporary Internet Files"
folder. As I said, they are INDEXED as being there but the actual .txt
files are NOT there - they are somewhere else on your system. Please go and
look for yourself. "PA Bear " got it right wen he said "Smoke and mirrors"
cos that's just what it is.

Once again (for the last time), if you open Regedit and go to the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\ShellFolders

you will find under the label "Cookies" the exact path where YOUR cookies
live on YOUR computer. I sincerely hope you get it...

Have you tried that yourself?

looked at three different XP machines (two on a domain and one not) and
in each case the string in that registry value is:

C:\Documents & Settings\%username%\Cookies

Which is what the OP said.

Alister,
What is there to try?
That is where they are.
ju.c mistakenly believes cookies are in \TIF.
Both PA Bear and Tim Meddick said that they are not really there.
Tim showed how to find \Cookies through the registry.
(An easier way is to just go to %userProfile%\Cookies)

There is no quoting back to the original article, but, from memory,
I believe the OP claims to have looked in his \Cookies. So, I am
left wondering what the actual point of your post is.

Also, where is the OP anyway?

I only referenced Cookies and Temporary Internet Files as a system of "smoke
& mirrors."

My fault, I misread the thread. I thought Tim was replying to the OP
who had already looked in %UserProfile%\Cookies. Sorry Tim.
I don't know where the OP is - I think he got bored!

My response was to "ju.c" who kept saying that cookies live in the
"Temporary Internet Files" folder, which they do not! Yes! The value you
stated IS the same as the OP's which is where they really are.
