You guys have responded in droves, and I am very grateful!
However... (There's always a but right?) I'm still having problems.
I downloaded spybot. Then I downloaded ad-ware, (so I thought! But it
tricked me into nonadware (some version, did a scan, then wanted me to pay,
of course!)
So I went straight to ccleaner and down loaded that.
My plan was to "restore' to a better time, then download these programs
again. But it won't let me restore???? Hmmmmm.
When I do anything, IE a web site, (yes, this one too,) word, publisher,
etc. it takes much longer than usual to load, then everything I want to do
hesitates, and often I have to click somewhere, anywhere, off the program, I
get an hour glass for a moment, then it lets me work the program. (Obviously,
I'm typing here.)
When I boot, it tells me I made a change to "utilities" and I have to say
okay.
Huh?
Any suggestions? I'd like to restore, (Damned that ADOBE 9!) then get the
excelent programs you guys have suggested, but it won't let me!!!!
AAAarrrgggg!

You should be looking at ad-aware not ad-ware. ad-aware is from lavasoft.

It sounds like you may also have a rootkit on your machine. Look for an
anti-rootkit program. AVG used to do one (you might be able to find a copy
somewhere) but they only now bundle it with the paid for version.

Two questions..

Do you have backups of your important stuff?

Do you still have a recovery partition or a recovery disk set?

Your message is confusing as to what you want to achieve. I suggest you post
some Event Viewer errir reports so we can what are the problems are.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

infections that cause this problem are often accompanied by an 'autorun'
file in the root of each drive. The worst ones will not allow you to change
folder settings either to let you see the hidden and system files. one is
called parite and when I got it I had to restore to factory condition. It
spreads by writing the autorun file on any drive including netork and pen
drives. It changes exe files to spread itself. if its parite it should be
picked up by avg but it wont let you install antivirus if you dont already
have one.

system restore can
be initiated via
safe mode.

however, if you have
anti virals installed like
norton or mcafee, you
may have to uninstall
them first.

Download this program, update the definitions if necessary and run it:

Anti-Malware 1.34, which is a great, free program, can be downloaded from
here:

http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-18510_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=10997763

I used it to clean up a PC with over 400 infections including root kits,
dialers, key stroke counters, and on and on

spyware writers are getting smarter and trickier.
I cleaned up a machine this week that wouldn't allow spybot, malwarebytes or
superantispyware to install, even in safe mode.
I got around it by changing the name of the installer.
Once installed mbam, spybotsd, etc wouldn't run, again I changed the name of
the executable then it ran.
malwarebytes found 89 infected files not counting cookies (which I think
shouldn't be counted anyway).

I know what you mean. A month ago, I worked on a PC and I could not run nor
install any AV or malware programs or fixes like ComboFix.exe. I slaved up
the infected drive in my old PC and used the cleaning programs on it to
clean the infected drive.

The current version is 1.36. The free version does not protect in real time
like Windows Defender does. Be sure to update using the "Update" tab before
scanning, whether quick or full (recommended).
