View Full Version : Network setup wizard: how to do manually?

Hi,

(Apologies if this is duplicated - I can't find the same problem
elsewhere)

I've got a problem with a computer that does not have the network setup
wizard installed (it was an install using nlite). It's running XPpro
SP3. I'm trying to access folders from another computer using XP pro SP3
(computer B).

(I can successfully access folders on computer B from the problem
machine.)

I have set the computer name and the workgroup, and when I view network
places from computer b, I cannot see the shared folders on "network
places", but I can see the computer under
entire network/microsoft windows network/[workgroup]/[computer name]
but attempting to access it gives

[computer name] is not accessible. You might not have permission...
etc.

The folders are shared and show up on "my network places" on the
problem computer along with shared folders from other computers on the
network. File and printer sharing is enabled on the LAN and wireless
connections. The workgroup is the same. Windows firewall is disabled on
both machines. I'm not sure if it's relevant, but my user login is the
same on both machines and there is no password set.

I am almost certain that running "network setup wizard" would solve the
problem (it fixed another machine showing exactly the same problem", but
as I said, it's not installed on this machine. So, can anyone tell me
how to go through the steps that the wizard would do manually? I thought
I got everything, but obviously something's missing...

The Network Setup Wizard doesn't do everything necessary, anyway.

Diagnose the problems from the bottom up. First, deal with Windows Networking.

Then look at file sharing / permissions. Be consistent in setting up Advanced
vs Simple File Sharing, authentication policy, etc.
