View Full Version : Defragmentation problem

April 20th 09, 02:21 PM
Dell Winxp SP2. When I defragment C:\ it says 1 file not
defragmented.C:\ is my only drive.
When I check "files that did not defragment it shows 0".
What is the problem ?

TIA

Could be your pagefile (which is in use)
Any file current in use or open can not
be defragmented.

What you may have is something similar to that from my own system.

The Master File Table is the only fragmented folder and is in 2 fragments.
The Master File Table and the Pagefile are never listed in the Files that
cannot be defragmented List.

Volume (C:)
Volume size = 39.06 GB
Cluster size = 4 KB
Used space = 8.47 GB
Free space = 30.59 GB
Percent free space = 78 %

Volume fragmentation
Total fragmentation = 0 %
File fragmentation = 0 %
Free space fragmentation = 0 %

File fragmentation
Total files = 38,381
Average file size = 320 KB
Total fragmented files = 0
Total excess fragments = 0
Average fragments per file = 1.00

Pagefile fragmentation
Pagefile size = 1.95 GB
Total fragments = 1

Folder fragmentation
Total folders = 3,111
Fragmented folders = 1
Excess folder fragments = 0

Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size = 50 MB
MFT record count = 41,537
Percent MFT in use = 80 %
Total MFT fragments = 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fragments File Size Files that cannot be defragmented
None

Hope this helps.

Thier are 2 ways to end those fragmented files,1st,after youre normal
disk cleanup & defrag,open system properties,set C: to "no page-file" click
set 2X,close out,restart pc.Once in xp,go to run,type:cmd In cmd type:
Defrag C: Once its thru, type:EXIT Reset C: to "let system manage" in
properties,
click set 2X,close out,restart pc.The other,TechNet @ microsoft has a defrag
utility that works on pc start-up,thus defragging files that would be in
use in
explorer,get that at:
