XP Install Disk?

I made a mistake. I copied the content of my original XP PRO (SP2)
installation disk onto my hard drive for backup. I did this a few
years ago thinking that was a good thing to do.

Now I need to reinstall XP because my old installation crashed.
Much to my dismay, I now find that the original disk boots, but fails
with read errors, and so will not install.

My Nero will not copy the original disk to an image either due to read
error.

I now realize that my saving just the content of the installation CD
was no good because I need a bootable CD disk containing those
files/folders to do the installation.

How can I create a b o o t a b l e CD disk containing the content I
had saved back when?

If you have your product key, and you have a friend that has an XP Pro CD of
the same type as yours, you can use their CD with your product key.

If you have your product key, and you have a friend that has an XP Pro CD of
the same type as yours, you can use their CD with your product key.

This may be because the CD now is defective -- or perhaps
the CD drive is defective. You can verify the CD in some
other PC. You can replace a CD ROM drive yourself for $10.

Since you copied the instal CD contents to the hard drive, it is
not clear why you do not (1) boot Safe Mode, (2) run SETUP
from the hard drive.

This may be because the CD now is defective -- or perhaps
the CD drive is defective. You can verify the CD in some
other PC. You can replace a CD ROM drive yourself for $10.

Since you copied the instal CD contents to the hard drive, it is

Actually, saving the contents of the CD wasn't a *total* mistake; at
least you have the i386 folder!

But in the future, create an .iso file!

Granted its for doing a slipstream but the directions are to move the CD
to your hard drive then slipstreaming it and putting it back. Its the
put it back that is the valuable part in your case. You might be able
to follow the latter part of those directions and make the CD.
Extracting the Bootimg file is the hard part if your CD is bad.

make an NERO NRG image (ie the CD will boot at least), then maybe I
can extract the 'BOOTING FILE' okay. I'll give the site a shot.

You can borrow any other bootable XP install CD to extract that from.

You can borrow any other bootable XP install CD to extract that from.
