How do I get Windows XP Pro to show photos & not just a box w/ a red X inside?

What do I have to do to change the settings with in my XP
Pro OS to allow .jpeg files to open up in place of the
small box with a RED X inside of the box? I had to
recently do a System Restore on my computer, and it seems
as though this is about the same time I started seeing
these boxes with the red x inside. What or where do I
need to go to select the option of having email attachmets
(jpeg files) open up automaticially?
