Can anyone tell me how to run a program in the Program Files folder that is
located on a desktop machine running ICS from a laptop? Both machines are
running XP Pro.

TIA

You need to install the program on the laptop, having checked with the
vendor first that such usage is permitted under the license, and that the
program is sufficiently network-aware to have multiple users running it at
the same time (if that is a possibility.)

Having a network in place doesn't change the way the programs work--they may
or may not be network aware, they may require a lengthy install procedure,
or they may be a simple single-executable (less-and-less the norm these
days, I'm afraid.)

The network may make it easier to share data files--but again, the programs
must be capable of handling multiple users for such shared access to work.

Nah, it's Xnews. I had no problem with ME. It'll run fine over a network,
it's just that XP Pro won't allow me access to the Program Files folder on
the desktop(ICS) machine, where Xnews is located.

Gotcha.

Am I remembering correctly that although you can't share Program Files, you
can share subdirectories thereof?

And second thought:

Is this an attribute of "simple file sharing."?

See Explorer, Tools, folder options, view tab, Advanced settings, scroll to
the end....

Tried it. No joy. Oh, well... I'll play with it until I get it fixed or
fix it where it can't be fixed.
