I'm having lots of unauthorized (and by and large
unsucessful) logon attempts in the event viewer under
admin. tools. It says to limit the number of logon
attempts to prevent "dictionary" logon attempts. How do
I do this?

Be sure you want to do that, if someone tries to logon to your account a set
number of times it'll be locked out. Be sure to also set the account
lockout duration so that you're account will unlock after a set number of
times. To limit the number of logon attempts, go to Start-Run, type
"secpol.msc". Expand Accounts Policies->Account Lockout Policy,
double-click Account lockout threshhold and enter the number of invalid
logon attempts you want to allow before the account is locked out.
BTW: When you say that these attempts are "by and large unsuccessful", does
that mean that some unauthorized logons are succeeding?
