I have a friend attempting to send me pictures in a
message. He has a 56K dial-up connection. When my cable
connection attempts to download his slow service, my
system times out and kills the connection. The system
will not download ANY other mail till it is done with
THIS message. How do I get it to either let it download
the message or not "time-out" disconnect? The system did
it's "time-out" thing while I typed this.

If he's sending you an email, the speed of his service has nothing to do
with it, as it's not going directly from him to you. If it's some sort of
direct transfer, maybe you ought to try email.

If you are using Outlook Express, go to Tools | Accounts and double click
the mail account. On the Advanced tab increase the Timeout slider a couple
notches.
