View Full Version : Desktop icons

Suddenly yesterday, my desktop icons have a problem. The wordings originally
below the icon was not enclosed in anything. But now, the wordings are
enclosed in a frame, all of them. The frames take space, overlap a bit on
adjacent ones, and individual icons are a bit hard to identify. Did the
spywares and anti-virus checks and cleaned up, but did not solve the
problem.

I've tried to get rid of the frames but I can't. Right click on
desktop/properties and tried some of the things there, bit without success.
Would appreciate some help.
TIA

Any chance you can post a screen shot to Photobucket or similar freebie
place? I can't tell just what you're trying to describe as there is not
literal "frame" involved there, but there is a space always dedicated to
the name for the icon's program name. It can be any color including the
same color as the screen background, or whatever the user wishes. So
the "frame" is there at all times even when it's not obivously seen.
Unhighlight the icon and usually you'll see the full text if that's the
problem. If the icons are located close together enough, their name
fields will indeed cover each other on the edges.

If you can't do a photobucket and description, maybe you can just
describe what it looks like in a lot more detail. I suspect all that
happened is the icon text background color was the same as the screen
background and it got changes to something else. Maybe?

Ben,
If you right-click on an empty area of the desktop, and then
choose the "Arrange Icons By" item, then, is there by any chance, a
"checkmark" next to the item labelled : "Lock Web Items on Desktop" ??

If so, this causes an underlying box to show on every shortcut on the
desktop (this is what I thought you meant by "frame").

To get rid - just click on this item (right-click on desktop > "Arrange
Icons By" > "Lock Web Items on Desktop") to remove the checkmark.

The color boxes will then disappear again.

Interesting; what might prevent that from working? I just tried it and
saw no difference at all. Did a Restart; still nothing looked any
different.
I'm curious what the OP is seeing.

Twayne,
I was assuming that the OP meant opaque backgrounds to the
labels underneath desktop icons, when he talked about "...enclosed in a
frame".

If it is what he meant, then there was a thread here, not so long ago,
where the appearance of a coloured box beneath the icon label and how to
get rid of it, was discussed.

I merely repeated the advice that was given back then by another poster.

As I tried it out for myself and did indeed find that if you set or
clear the checkmark from the "Lock Web Items on Desktop" item
(right-click on desktop > 'Arrange Icons By' > 'Lock Web Items on
Desktop') then it brings back or clears, respectively, the solid label
background colour.

I'm not at all sure why this effect does not happen on your computer, or
what setting would intercede to prevent it.
