Cannot Display This Video Mode

After a new install of XP Pro w/SP3 on my old Dell Dimension 4500. I did the
Windows Updates. Restarted and the monitor hit black screen with the message:
Cannot Display This Video Mode - Optimum resolution 1680 x 1050 60 Hz

Restarted in Safe mode and reverted to the previous. Did the install of
Office 2007 and then did Windows and Office Updates and had the same result
on restart.

Any suggestions on what not to update but get the critical stuff?

Did Windows Update offer any hardware drivers ?

Did you install any of those hardware drivers ?

Hardware drivers offered on Windows Update, seem to cause
nothing but trouble. If you want updates for drivers, get
them from the Dell download page.

Hello,

Look for the Dell 'Drivers and Utilities' disc that should have come with
your system.

Insert the disc and follow the prompts to install the required drivers.

From Dell:

After Microsoft Windows XP is reinstalled on a computer with a Flat Panel
LCD monitor, the error message Cannot Display This Video Mode may appear.
This is due to the monitor failing to autosense the refresh rate of the
display video adapter.

To resolve this problem, power off the monitor, wait for 15 seconds, and
then power monitor on. While the monitor is powering up, it will detect the
signal from the display video adapter and should function normally.
