Is there a comparable utility in Windows XP Professional that is like
scandisk in Windows 2000?

Yes. Error checking. Help files might lead you there, or perhaps google.

There is no Scandisk in Windows 2000. Both Windows 2000 and Windows XP
use the Chkdsk utility for disk checking. Open a Command Prompt and
issue chkdsk /? for more help.

Yes, chkdsk is the name for the program roughly equivalent to scandisk
in *all* versions of Windows NT. But note that both Windows XP and
Windows 2000 are Windows NT versions, so they *both* use chkdsk, not
scandisk.

Just like in Win98 if you right-click on a drive and choose 'Properties'
to bring up the drive's property page - then click on the 'Tools' tab.

Then, under the 'Tools' tab you will find the same (similar) set of
tools -

Error-checking

Defragmentation

Backup

....and the first one - Error-checking - is comparable with Scandisk for
Windows (scandskw.exe), when you click on the 'Check Now' button.

Although, the interface is somewhat simpler, it does the same thing -
checks and fixes file system errors on the drive or partition.

This interface runs chkdsk in the background but you can run it directly
by opening a 'Command Prompt' (dos-box) window and typing :

chkdsk c:

....you can also type :

chkdsk /?

....for help on how to use this utility.

This is comparable to using Scandisk (scandisk.exe) for DOS

BTW - Scandisk is a Fat and Fat32 file system checker - as far as I know
it did NOT come with Win2000 but with the DOS Windows versions (Win3x,
Win9x, WinME) only - not on NT-based Win versions.
