KB943460 / Software Distribution Service 3.0 System Restore Proble

Hi

Running Xp SP3

KB943460 was installed routinely by Windows Update.

KB943460 has installed a program called Software Distribution Service 3.0 on
my computer.

Since then everytime I use Windows Update a restore point is created tagged
Software Distribution Sevice 3.0

The 'problem' ?

All my restore points will now not launch yes all of them !!

I have tried everything to rid myself of KB943460 but cannot see or unistall
it.

Please please what is the fix ?

Anyone else had a similar experience ?

Just what is Software Distribution Service 3.0 ?

Are you certain that you're running WinXP SP3? (SP3 includes KB943460).

How have you determined that KB943460 is causing the System Restore problem?

What happens when your try to use System Restore? Post any error messages
in their entirety.

Have you recently attempted a Repair Install of Windows? If so, what
problems where you having that you thought a Repair Install would resolve?

Thanks for your note.

I agree one post is sufficient.

I am pretty desperate and wanted to use a variety of headings (3) to ensure
those with expertise looked and my plea

To answer your questions

1) Yes I am certain I am using Xp SP3

2) I 'googled' Software Distribution Service 3.0 before I realised it was a
Microsoft program

Up came a long list of fellow sufferers with the same 'problem'

Have a go yourself and you will see what i mean.

3) If I use any of my restore points the process launches then up comes the
standard.

'Windows cannot complete a restore no changes have been made to your
computer.please try another restore point'

I have tried all I have (2% allocated) none complete.

Incidently KB 943460 does not appear on my 'Control Panel
'install/uninstall' list

It seems to launch itself everytime I use Windows 'Update'

I will settle for the official Microsoft instructions of how to rid myself
of the update (KB943460)

I reckon Microsoft must be aware of the problem.

Repost/please answer: Have you recently attempted a Repair Install of
Windows? If so, what problems where you having that you thought a Repair
Install would resolve?

If WinXP SP3 were installed properly, Windows Update should not have offered
KB943460, and if WinXP SP3 is installed, you cannot uninstall KB943460.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

A lot of people aren't aware of that fact that installing just about
anything via Windows Update/Automatic Updates creates a Restore Point by
that name.

First I must thank you for your efforts and patience.

Now to answer your questions.

No I have never needed or attempted any Xp repair.

Xp runs just fine on my system and for that reason I have resisted an
upgragde to Vista.

I am currently running MacAfee Security with all features
(Virus/Firewall/Parental Security etc)

It is interesting that originally I used Norton Security and there is a
known issue with Norton causing 'problems' with System Restore points.

Norton publish a fix but when I had the chance I switched to MacAfee which
has run for more than 2 years without any problem vis a vie System Restore.

Your point on being offered KB943460 is interesting.

My windows update is set 'automatic' and i cannot remember being offered
KB943460 specifically I just install all the updates.

It is on;y recently i have seen the term 'Software Distribution Service 3.0'
used.

Previously it was just 'System Restore Point' which were restore points
randomly created from time to time.

That feature has stopped working and I realised 'Software Distribution
Service 3.0 was appearing whenever Windows update had operated.

I can still create a restore point manually but none work.

I do not understand why i cannot just rid myself of KB943460 and hope you
will be able to explain that.

Are you referring to McAfee Security Center, a freebie from your ISP?

Has nother McAfee application ever been installed (e.g., a free trial
preinstalled when you bought the computer)?

1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
(If in doubt, use the "Norton 2007 product" link.)

2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3. Double-click on the file you saved in #1 above to run the utility. Do
not TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot.

Thanks for all the effort PA Bear

My Macafee is a full program supplied by my ISP (British Telecom)

I am confident I had stripped all traces of Norton from my machine before I
installed MacAfee.

My system and MacAfee are running quite normally (other than the unwelcome
mystery of SDS 3.0)

I am glad to have the link for the Norton removal tool which I will store.

I think we can ignore the possibility of a protection software glitch
causing the problem.

To summarise

Once Windows Update runs it sets up system restore point under the heading
Software Distribution Service 3.0

Any restore point with that tag ( Software Distribution Service) launches
but does not complete the task

Worse it seems to infect all previous restore point with the identical
problem.

I tested that

If I manually set up a restore point (later in the day than SDS ) that
restore point works just fine.

I am further pointing the finger at KB943460

My machine no longer generates the default system restore points randomly
set up from time to time with the tag 'system restore point' that tag has
been replaced by SDS 3.0

So PA Bear just what is Software Distribution Service 3.0 ?

Why cannot I see KB943460 ?

What is the Microsoft rationale ?

Is there a removal tool ?

I know I am being a bore PA Bear

If the worse comes to the worse I can switch off System Restore

You will know it is a wonderful but fragile tool.

That must be a better option I reckon than switching off Windows Update.

I hope all this has not made you cross

I am gambling you will understand my sense of frustration

There must be an answer (I hope)

I would not rely on that McAfee freebie from your ISP to secure any computer
and here's why: There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects
of a hijackware infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:

I have learned from this experience.

I can cope with all you have so generously supplied but will have to work
through everything slowly.

I am never ashamed to admit I do not know or to ask questions.

I am going to rely on your goodwill just once more thaen shut down this
thread.

I am hating myself for wasting your time.

The reason for my final question (s) is I am not convinced I have any
infection.

My machine is functioning just fine and I do not access sites where I might
get myself into trouble.

All I want to do is rid myself of the effect of having 'update' KB943460
imbedded in my system.

So here goes

What do you think is 'Software Distribution 3.0' ?

Why are Microsoft so coy about admitting anything about the program ?

(I can trace nothing on Microsoft.com)

Why does KB943460 hide itself on machines running Xp SP3 ?

According to my researches outside Microsoft there is a 'two page
instruction for removal of KB943460' that can be obtained from
Microsoft...how ?

I'm not either but it's certainly a distinct possibility, especially since
you're relying on McAfee Security Center. (If you browse threads in Malware
Removal forums, you'll find that the vast majority of posters are running
McAfee Security Center or AVG Free. That should tell you something.)

1. KB943460 is not causing your System Restore problems.

2. If you're running WinXP SP3, the files included in SP3 supersede those in
KB943460 (i.e., SP3 includes newer versions of the two files KB943460
installs; i.e., shell32.dll & xpsp3res.dll), so it doesn't make sense that
KB943460 was offered by Windows Update if everything was OK...and I suspect
it isn't.

I know what it is: Every time you install a Windows Update, a Restore Point
named 'Software Distribution 3.0' is created.

(Now who's being coy?) See above. I have no idea what you're talking
about.

SUMMARY: If you'd installed SP3 and then Windows Update offered the machine

of this behavior is a hijackware infection.

Sorry if I seemed coy its simply I had it my head you were a Microsoft
moderator of the forum.

I thought that when you rapped my knuckles for multiple postings to the
forum (I will not do that again)

There is a lot of 'chatter' over the internet concerning
'SoftwareDistribution Service 3.0' and I have been told more than once
Micrcrosoft themselves publish a 'two page' instruction to uninstall.

As I now know you are not with Microsoft I have raised the issue direct with
Microsoft.

A Microsoft 'support technician' is currently looking remotely at my
computer and I am promised an answer.

I am still very uncomfortable....just what is 'Software Distribution
Service' ?

I suppose it might simply be a rebrand of Windows Update.

You are rid of me but I will always be grateful for your efforts.

It's a service used by Windows Update or Automatic Updates to install
updates on your PC.

When updates are downloaded by Windows Update or Automatic Updates, the
installers for the updates are downloaded to
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download <=this folder, which Software
Distribution Service then uses to install them.

If you chose to download an update (e.g., KB943460) from MS Download Center
(http://microsoft.com/downloads) or the Microsoft Update Catalog
(http://catalog.update.microsoft.com) and install it manually, the related
entry in System Restore would read "Security Update for Windows XP SP2
(KB943460)".
