Upon booting XP I have no Start Menu or Desktop Icons.
I've tried to run a repair with XP install disk and this did not bring them
back.
I checked the forums and can not seem to find an answer/
Please help

On next startup tap F8 until you get a Menu. Select Safe Mode. If the
computer boots into safe mode try a system restore. You can do that by
going to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. Just
follow the instructions.

Thanks for the quick response. I tried the Safe Mode and after booting up the
only thing that was on the screen was "safe mode" text?
Also tried "Last known good configuration"
and Repair.
When I save new shortcuts to desktop, it acts as though it saved it but Icon
does not display????
All that is displayed is my wallpaper and must run everything from my Task
Manager".

Hi,

This generally has to do with display drivers. If you have recently done so
or ran the MS updates to do so, try a rollback via the Device Manager. If
this is not the case, use Ctrl/Alt/Delete and end process on Explorer.exe if
it is listed and either way, then go to File/New Task (Run) and type in:
Explorer.exe.

Explorer.exe repeatedly quits unexpectedly in Windows XP

If still nothing:

Restore Taskbar and Desktop to Default Functionality (Line 164)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you
may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double click the vbs
file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this
is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These
scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.

Hello,

Try it in safe mode command prompt instead.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449 ( How to start the System Restore
tool by using the safe mode option with the Command prompt in Windows XP)
for a detailed guide on this
