During a disk cleanup cycle, I got a popup that said a problem with SP3 had
occured and I needed to insert my SP3 disk to correct the issue. Since I
have no SP3 disk, I want to know if I can uninstall SP3 and then reinstall
it. If so, how do I do that?

Create a slipstreamed Windows XP sp3 CD (assuming that you actually have
*some* Windows XP CD):
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=slipstream+sp3&cts=1248715973884&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g10

Or try pointing the request for your sp3 CD to
%windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386\

Thanks Lem, but my XP software came already installed on my computer,
therefore, I do not have an XP cd or a SP3 cd.

If your machine is working OK and it's not causing problems, you can go
to MS and either download SP3 or install it. And, there will be two
SP3's available: The Full version which handles all machines, and a
smaller one that's the big one pared down for your machine only.
Or, for a small fee you can order an SP3 CD I believe, and have it
snailed to you.
Just go to their site update.microsoft.com and search for
download sp3 or even just sp3 if you want more hits and
choices.

If you're in a hurry, go to the site and see if you can just install it.
I'm not sure whether you can or not since it's going to look already
installed so you may have to remove it first using its uninstaller;
Add-Remove if you're lucky will have it there. Then you can go back
later and download it.

While you'/re there you might also download the prerequsites to SP3
which are SP1a OR SP2. SP3 won't install right unless one of those two
are installed first. SP2 is a standalone and doesn't require 1 or
anything else to go along with it.

you can uninstall sp3
via add/remove programs.

then once your system
has restored the sp2
system files,

you can use your xpsp2
cd to repair the system.
------------------
it is unclear as to why
such a message popped
up.

but I don't think it is windows
producing the message.

perhaps, it is from your
anti virus or something
that is producing the error,

if it’s a real / true error.

you may want to ignore
the message, unless you
see evidence that your
current sp3 system is un
stable.

if so, then initiate a restore
point instead to revert the
system back before the
clean up.

then investigate what is
being "cleaned" up by
the process you are using.

What sort of "cleanup cycle" was this? Were you running the native
Windows Disk Cleanup utility or some 3rd party application? Have you
experienced any other issues since you received that message? If the
message came from a 3rd party app and you haven't experienced any
problems, I would ignore the popup and not use that application again.

If your computer came with XP sp3 already installed, then you can't
uninstall it.

If your computer came with an earlier service pack level of XP and you
used Windows Update to install sp3, when the popup asks for your SP3 cd,
click "Browse" and go to %windir%\ServicePackFiles\ (or possibly
%windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386)

If you *really* want to uninstall sp3 (assuming, as I said, that you
installed it after you bought your computer), see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249
But I recommend that you *not* uninstall sp3 (in addition to any other
problems that might be caused by uninstalling sp3 at this point, the
odds are that if you do whatever you did to cause the initial "popup" it
will ask for a Windows CD -- which you don't have).

Are you referring to Disk Cleanup or CHKDSK?

It likely wants the Windows XP CD with SP3 integrated.

Earlier you said you did not get a Windows XP installation CD with your
computer - I suggest you obtain one.

If you have a CD burner - why buy the CD when you can download the ISO image
file and create your own CD for the cost of a blank CD and a little time?

Windows XP SP3 ISO image:

The link that you gave
www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2fcde6ce-b5fb-4488-8c50-fe22559d164e&displaylang=en
looks to me like SP3 only, not the full OS with SP3 integrated.

The reason I say this is because it doesn't mention what version of XP it is (Home retail, Home OEM,
Pro retail, Pro OEM, VLK).

Could you confirm this?

Yes, it is only the SP3 update. That's why purchasing the SP3 CD (or
downloading and burning the ISO file) will almost certainly not solve
the OP's issue.

Do you have an i386 folder anywhere on your hard drive?

What is the make and model of your PC?

Do you have XP Home or XP Pro?

What exactly do you mean by the phrase "disk cleanup cycle"? What
exactly did you do? What was the *exact* message?

If you reboot your computer, does it work? If not, please be specific
and tell us everything that happens, including any messages you see in
their entirety.
