I connectusing AOL over a dialup modem. I go into Windows
Update and get one critical application to update: Windows
Service Pack 1 (Express) 1.9 MB 4 minutes. The
description say this maximum size of this install may be
30 MB.

It downloads in about 15 minutes.

When I goes to install and it asks if I want archive in
case I want to reinstall. I say yes.

I then proceed to install, all the time connected to AOL.
It say it will take 188 minutes!

I can get about half way through this install and it
breaks - and I am not sure if it is the phone connection
or the install.

Ideally, it seems to me I should be able to download the
Service Pack, go off-line, and then install.

Suggestions on how to do this thing?

Thanks,

Steve

What you're downloading isn't the entire service pack, it's just the install
file that downloads the rest of the SP from MS. Do a search on MS's site
for the SP XP 1 Network Install.

Download the Network Installation and burn to CD:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/
DSL takes about 20 minutes, dial up considerably longer.

Keep in mind that if you are having trouble using the Express Install, you
are more than likely going to have trouble downloading the Network Install
too. The Express Install gets only updates that your particular setup
needs, not all of the files.

You may be better off downloading the Network Install on a friend's computer
that has a high speed internet connection, since such connections are
usually much more reliable for large file transfers. Then, burn the network
installation to a CD, take it home, and install from there.
