Bootup problem

After several successful bootups, I get the message that xp can't start
successfully because of a recent hardware or software installation. Usually
it comes after the bar runs two or three times, and sometimes it freezes at
the bar.If it doesn't freeze, after the error message, I wait the 27 or so
count down seconds and it boots. This happens about once in several boots. I
think I have traced the problem to INCD. I have removed it and installed the
most recent 4.0 version and am testing it out. My question is under what
circumstances would XP boot ok five or six times and then give the above
message.If it is software related and that is the highly likely senario,
wouldn't it not boot all the time untill the software was removed. Advice
please on this boot up problem. Thanks

What, if any, errors are there in the system event log?

What is the exact verbage of the error? Sounds to me like a possible
activation issue but I would like some more information.

Howdy,

There are no errors in the event logs and it can't be an activation issue as
it' been running fine for a year. The error message I get says " We
appologize for the onconvenience but windows did not start successfuly. A
recent hardware or software change might have caused this.......Then the
options are given. I always let the time run down and boot normally because
I believe it is a software issue and Im methodically going backwards. My
problem is that I will get many successful boots then it happenns again.
What would cause this? In addition sometimes the screen will freeze as the
green led does it's thing. A reset boots to the error message and then
boots up aftewr the count down. The problem will always occur as the led
starts running. What is the machine doing as the green led starts running?
Getting to the bottom of this sporadic problem is driving me nuts. I thought
I had it with INCD, but I uninstalled and it still happened. Any suggestions
are welcome.This boot problem happens approximately on every tenth boot or

I have now had 20 good boots in a row, then it frooze as soon as the green
led started, same message, then it booted. I have now had three successful
boots after that. All I did was run the basic scan and defrag after the
freeze. This is baffeling!
