Hi I just bought 2 computers from a yard sale...

One is a Dell Dimension B110, missing some of the guts. The other is an older
(*2003) Dell Dimension 4600. Both have Win XP Home. But neither have the
resource CD needed for the drivers and such. I bought one to surf the
internet while I render on my full system. And the other is for my hubby a
true puter noob. He is going to get the 4600 first as it has all the guts. I
have WinXP Home and Pro discs so that is ok, and I only plan to put 'home' on
his. But without the resource CD I can't set his up. Advice and link to
download if possible?

I will be registering both systems on my Dell Business account. But as of
tonight I can't access the services tags as it is not yet switched to my name.
Can I do this on line at Dell? Does anyone know this for sure???

ThanX a bunch for the help and this is my first post, I just joined. I look
forward to getting to know everyone soon! I am scary Techy! LOL! that means I
listened everytime my dell died to the techs! I do get into the guts, but
consider myself a post-noob hardware expert. And a fair software expert! I do
3D graphics. Nice to be here....

You can enter the service tag from the computer, on the Dell download
page and get the driver list. That may be a bit cleaner than looking
it up with the general search on the Dell front page.

http://support.dell.com/support/index.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs

You can use the Device Manager, to see any stuff which remains
unresolved.

With any luck, you won't need to press F6 when installing from the WinXP
CD. If the Intel Southbridge is in a vanilla IDE mode, the default Microsoft
driver should work. Options might be IDE, AHCI, RAID. IDE would be preferred
for easy installation. They might also use terminology in the BIOS
like Enhanced or Compatible. Enhanced puts the storage interfaces in PCI
space, and allows all storage interfaces to be used. Compatible places
the storage interfaces in I/O space, where an OS like Win98 can find them.
While Compatible works with the most OSes, it also only supports four
storage devices. Enhanced supports as many as there are on the Southbridge.
The BIOS probably defaults to the right thing (IDE - Enhanced), but if you
get stuck and cannot complete the first reboot of the installation, have a
look at the BIOS settings for the chipset and its storage interfaces.

The default settings are typically determined by the most common needs
at the time the computer is released. For example, on a modern Vista
machine, the settings in the BIOS work best for Vista. And may need
to be adjusted a bit, if you wanted to install WinXP without pressing
F6 and providing drivers. In the case of your 4600, the defaults
are more likely to suit WinXP.

Dell can provide you with the missing disks. They're pretty good about
it when I ask for using them for customer's machines. I pass the
originals on to the customer.

ThanX Paul, and Good morning!

I just talked to dell and now have to call yet another number...
I mainly was concerned for the Ethernet Controller download, and if that is
not on the puter I could not find out if it is working or not. I will be back
shortly with any update info.
