View Full Version : Desktop Icons

I recently installed a link/shortcut to a website (Google Reader) on my
Windows XP desktop. At first the desktop icon was the logo of the website,
but a few days later it suddenly changed to the logo of the web browser
(Firefox). The link/shortcut itself still works fine, but I've since been
struggling to figure out how to change the icon back to the website logo or
at least some other logo. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Alex

Those specialized icons are called "favicons". They disappear when you
delete your Temporary Internet Files (which should be done periodically for
good maintenance). Here is a link from MVP Rick Rogers showing you how to
keep them:

http://rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#Favicons - Favicons

Since you use Firefox there is an easier way to get the favicon.
On the page you want, go to Tools -> Page Info -> Tab Media
You will see the pages pictures and favicon.ico if there is one.
Select it and you can save it from there.

That's cool, Bernd. Of course, I'm not the OP and I don't care about
favicons, but that's very interesting to know.

I must admit, that I found it by accident, searching for a source of
favicons in firefox' bookmarks.
