View Full Version : Copying files on to a CD-RW

THE FSGT
September 29th 09, 12:40 PM
For some reason every time I select either Drives D,E,F and G I get a message
telling me to insert Disc even though a Disc has been inserted. What I am
trying to do is transfer some docs. from my hard drive to a CD-RW. Is this
possible and if so how do I go about it? Note:- I leave a bit to be desired
in computer skills. I have Windows XP.

Easiest way : copy using pen/thumb drive or external hard drive . (
Pen/thumb drive cheapest way )

Verify that you have the proper CD drive enabled to burn.

Go to My Computer
Right-click on the drive (CD burner)
Select Properties
Select Recording tab
Check "Enable CD recording on this drive"
Click Apply and OK

You only get to choose one drive (CD burner).

Thanks David, I suspect that I do not have the proper CD drive. what I have
in My Computer is:-Hard Disk Drive ACER(C:)
Devices With Removable Storage
Removable Disk(D:)
(E:)
(F:)
(G:)
DVD Drive (H:)
Now, as I said, I put a CD-RW into the computer and select one of the (D to
G) Drives and I always get a message saying to insert disk.
Any further help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

So do you actually *have* 4 CD drives plus the DVD drive? I kinda doubt it
:)

What does Device Manager say? What drives are shown in Windows Explorer
("My Computer")? You have to insert a CD into the correct physical
device...

D, E, F, and G? Do you have *four* CD drives?

What CD-burning program do you use? Please tell us the exact verbatim
text of the message. What program is the message coming from--Windows
or the CD program?

Be aware that you can not simply copy files to a CD as you would to a
hard drive unless you have special packet-writing software installed.

There is a window opens, titled Backup Utility
Drive D:\is empty.
OK

The same message appears when I select E, F and G.

After having read all the very helpful replies, I can only come to the
conclusion that I don't have the required software installed. I,m not sure
about the number of drives, however when I open My Computer that is what is
shown.

perhaps you can try out the
device by inserting a music
cd.

if it plays or you don't get the
error message then it is likely
you have a cd-r player installed
and not a cd-rw player.

however, there can also be a
problem if you do have a cd-rw
player,

which is a dirty head and it simply
can't read anything that is inserted.

Are you are trying to run the backup utility? Exactly what program are
you executing?

No, that's the wrong conclusion. Windows XP comes with CD burning
software. You can write to a CD drive, but you have to do it
correctly. Clearly you are doing something wrong, but from what you've
told us far, I'm not sure what it is.

When you open My Computer and you see D, E, F, and G, how are each of
those drives identified? What are they called?

It's not impossible that you have four CD drives, but it's *extremely*
rare than anyone has that many.

After reading all the input so far, I'm pretty sure that your Drives D,E,F
and G are not associated with your CD/DVD player/writer; they are more
likely associated with one or more flash card slots. The most likely choice
you should use is DVD Drive (H:) . DVD drives almost always will also read
and write CDs.

Sounds like you're trying to use packe-writing program. They allow you
to treat the DVD as any old disk drive letter. If so, then the DVD
needs to be formatted first.

Assuming your DVD drive is a burner, it most likely will burn CD media also, but
you must be sure that it's enabled to do so. Follow my previous instructions on
your H drive.

Since there is nothing to read, ie a blank cd, you will get that message,
however Xp has a native cdburning ability, insert the blank cd open windows
explorer select the files you want to copy, put them in a temp location till
you have all the files you want to copy, then drag them to the cd drive in
this case (g) a menu should pop up asking if you want to burn these files to
cd, reply yes.

In the case of a CDRW disc, in order to have it open to multiple writes, you
need third part software ie roxio or some such, as it enables the packet
writing and can leave a session open for multiple writes. The native burning
cd ability of Xp is one session only, ie the reason for copying all files
going to cd to a temp location before drag and drop to cd, once written
that's it. it's closed.

Thanks Paul'
When I put a Cd in the DVD Drive it playes perfectly. When I put the blank
CD-RW in, it gives the message to insert Disk. When I put a pen/flash drive
in one of the USB slots it recognises it as Removable Disk(I:). In a
nutshell, I don't know what C,D,F,and G are for. (I assumed they were for
recording blank Disks on.)

Then H: is your CD/DVD Drive. D, E, F, and G are other things
entirely. Do you have thumb drives or anything else plugged into USB
ports.

You didn't answer my other questions. Are you are trying to run the
backup utility? Exactly what program are you executing?

Ah: see if this helps any.

Do you get the message simply by putting the CD in the drive and doing
nothing else? If so, it's trying to Auto-run to play a CD. It's been
set to play CDs in all cases. You -should- get a dialog asking you what
you want to do, where you can reply with Nothing. Then you can access
the drive with Explorer which of course will fail if the CD isn't
formatted and has never been written to.

I can't say much more due to lack of useful information so I'll ask:
-- IS the drive capable of burning CD/DVD media? It would be unusual
these days but it's possible. On the drive's tray will be some symbols:
Some of them will either indicate "writable" or "burnable" or some such
thing and will have various symbols that together indicate what media
the drive will handle and if it'll write, what media it can write to.

Hi,
I have nothing inserted in the USB Ports. I start with Accessories, then
System Tools, then Backup.
Backup or Restore Wizard opens, I select files and settings, then Next.
Then, Choose a place to save your backup. I then get a Removable Disk(D:) to
(G:) selection.I put CD-Rw into PC, then I get message, Drive (D:)\is empty.
If I open Drive (H:) in my Computer, With the CD-RW in, I get message, Please
insert a disc into drive H:
If you tell me that I'm out of my depth, I shall not be offended, as I am.

Then I don't understand why they are apparently reported as Devices
with Removable Storage
Removable Disk(D:) Removable Disk(E:) Removable Disk(F:)
Removable Disk(G:) DVD Drive(H:)

I'd probably need to see your computer to understand what's happening.

You can *not* do this. The backup utility does not have the ability to
write directly to a CD.

Because Backup doesn't permit using a CD drive.

My Computer is trying to read the CD in the drive and you have
apparently inserted a blank CD there. It's asking you to insert one it
can read.

Ken and everyone else'
Many thanks for all your help, I have learned quite a bit but I obviously
need to gen. up a good deal more before I attempt anything like this. I shall
put my files, etc. on to flash drives and/or an external hard drive. (I do
know how to do this.)
Once again, Ta everyone. H.
