Problem: Encryption box is greyed out and cannot be
selected for a folder.
Background: new to XP features

Windows XP Home does not support Encryption (EFS)
For Windows XP Pro, you must be NTFS file system and have Simple File
Sharing disabled:

EFS is very good at what it does and there is no back door.
