Using a program called Startup Manager--an excellent program for seeing
what's in your bootup startup options--I noticed a new one with the path
C:\WINNT\System32\ctfmon.exe. I THINK (though I'm not sure) that a new
installation of Ahead Nero Rom 5.5 OEM did this.

Can I remove this from the startup options?

You can read details about that programme at
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/ctfmon/
before you decide to remove it.
If you still want to, go to start>run type msconfig . Go to the startup tab,
uncheck anything in the list you don't want, click 'apply' click 'ok'. The
changes take effect after reboot.
Hope this helps
