I recently installed a new copy of windows xp onto my
computer, but i had backed up all my files of windows
2000 onto a seperate ide hard drive. The problem is is
that when i click on the drive, it says access is denied.
So when i try to change the security options of the drive
i find out that it doesnt have any. Why is this? And how
can i get the regular security options of windows 2000 on
windows xp (Like when you go into security for win 2000
and it has all the user names in the box and you would
choose whether they had full control or just read
capibilties for hard drives).

You will need to take ownership of the folder(s), as described here:

If you have XP Professional, you need to turn of "Simple File Sharing".

To do so, use "Tools" menu, "Folder Options" from any Explorer shell window
(such as "My Computer"). Under the "View" tab, "Use simple file sharing" is
the last setting in the list. Uncheck it and apply.

If you have XP Home, you can:

a) Start Windows in Safe Mode and log on with an administrator account to
change permissions;

b) Use command line tools (cacls, xcacls). These will work as expected,
regardless of mode and account you are logged on with.
