Over the last few days, when I click the red X to close a
window or program, it justs makes a "Boink" sound & does
nothing. so I've been minimizing & doing whatever else I
have to do, then using ctrl-alt-delete to shut things
down when I'm all finished. Sometimes if I do that right
away, it closes down everything running all at once, or
at least a few of the open things,, not just the
particular window that I'm trying to switch off. Please
explain what's going on for me in very simple terms as I
have no computer background at all, trying to be self-
taught - getting there on some things, but hopelessly
behind on many more! Thanks!

Hi Midge,

Start/run 'sfc /scannow'

Have your WinXP CD handy as it verifies system file integrity.
