After advice and with phone support from my computer
store I re-installed XP Home to solve a minor graphics
problem but it seems my harddrive data has been erased in
the process. The computer store can't help - "Oh, didn't
you have a back-up?". Is there any way to recover 9
months of accumulated data which was saved on the
harddrive? I have kept up with regular updates, including
Service Pack 1, but I have no external back-up and only
one harddrive.

Your only hope is to stop using that harddrive now.
Then you can pay to have a low level recovery run on it.
Much may be recoverable, but not guarantees on what and
how much. The more the disk is used, the recoverable
amount will decrease. Look for local data recovery
services.

Richard;
It will probably be expensive.
It is important not to do anything with the computer until a decision
is made.
Every boot and even every keystroke potentially permanently destroys
the data.
